Here are a couple of schools that I would recommend, and there websites. I'm posting these mostly for people that are looking for something other than Jujutsu or Toeido. Tae Kwon Do/ HapkidoThe Academy: www.lfck.org/index.html Marc England and Mr. George teach out of this school, from what I hear they are some of the best tae kwon do/ hapkido instructors in the area. AikidoOnshinkan Dojo: www.aikidoconnection.com/indiana/ I took classes here for about a month, before I decided aikido is not for me, but the instructors are both excellent at teaching and preforming aikido. Mixed Martial Arts/ Brazillian JujutsuRobinson's Martial Arts: www.robinsonsma.cmasdirect.com/site/view/Home.pml Pat Robinson is an excellent martial artist and had had a lot of experince in martial arts. He is currently teaching out of Southlake Nautilis in Valpo. I've just started training there and I like it. KarateHobart Karate CenterThey don't have a website but a fine karate school in the area. Rudy Pavletic Sensei is an excellent practioner. The phone number is (219) 942-0660

I drove by Tiger Martial Arts today, and sure enough they got this big sign out from that says "JUJITSU". I call em up to ask about it, by a fluke they were just about to start class so I went on in and gave it a try out. They have I think they said kenpojujitsu or something like that mon and wed @6:30. and fridays at 6 the have small circle jujitsu. That's what I went to. Very interesting, went over a lot of stuff I already know but with slightly different ways of applying it, and a strong focus on wrist strength leverage and finger/wrist joint manipulation. The teacher has a belief in energy stuff and charkas and acupuncture pressure points and I find it a little questionable but I'm being open minded... For example, he had a guy in a finger lock, then he reached out and touched another student and the guy in the lock dropped to his knees from the pain. Apparently, when you have someone in a joint lock, and you make physical contact with another person, magically energy is transferred from the other person to your victim's joint, causing more pain. Yeah WTF I dunno either. The teacher is also 8th dan in Dillman Karate, which is famous for its Ki Attack which only works against your own students, sometimes. But who knows it could be real but my logic thusfar says no. But that alone won't defer me from learning whatever else there is to learn. Other than that though, everyone there was really nice, very informal and relaxed atmosphere, bowing only done at start and end of class. I enjoyed the different approaches to applying ude garami and the kimura they had, I'm gonna go back for the other jujitsu class and see how that goes. Dan, have you started at Robinson's yet? if so, how goes it?

Be wary of the energy stuff. Ive trained in some, not to the extent of no touch knockouts or even pressure point set-ups for knock outs. There not very combat proven though, hard to do against a resisting opponent. I saw this video of a guy who claimed he couild do no touch knockouts fight a brazzilian jujutsu guy, he tried like 10 times and every time got taken down and submitted. The pressure point knockouts work mostly because the last technuiqe in the series is usually a normal knockout point like the jaw, neck, chin or temple.
I know the head instructor there is pretty good at tae kwon do, but I dont know anything about the jujutsu guy, whats his name? Small circle jujutsu is supposed to be a pretty good art for self defense, however I dont think they do any free style sparring since they do a lot of small joint manipulation.

I'd like to get some deadly standup game going...

Yeah I think the closest judo pace is in chicago One of the guys over at pats that stops in from time to time, has a black belt in judo I belive. Hes an older guy, I cant remember his name right now though. As for striking They have kickboxing at Hobart Karate Center, I think its tuesday/thursday because i remember I couldnt go to that class because of jujutsu. Duneland Vale Tudo also deals with stricking on tuesday thursday, cause I couldnt go to that either They do grappeling on Mon/Wed. I was real impressed with the Hobart guys Karate, never got to see their kickboxing. Havent really seen the duneland guys striking class, they look pretty good in their fights though.

Well, I just went to Robinson's last night. There were some high caliber players in there. I rolled with about 5 people (4 whites, one blue) after class and only beat one of them (kneebar, go me).
Everyone was super nice and approachable, and there is a lot to learn there.
I also rolled with Mike's friend, the short one he works with. That was the only fight to start from standing, and let me tell you, that kid can scramble. That was the first time someone has taken my back from standing. You expect it from these guys but it's different to actually feel it happening.

New BJJ place in valpo...On the corner of rt 30 and washington/rt 2, next to Aurelio's Pizza. www.teamcorral.comvalpo school schedule www.c3fighter.com/cma/schedules3.htmI went by there today after class and it looks to be up and running, but it was closed. I heard from Zach that it's contract only and something crazy like $75/month, but that's not confirmed and was told to be before it was open.
