Yellow Belt (Hachikyu)
General Requirements
1. You must have attended a minimum of ten class sessions before you can test for your first belt. 2. You must know the belt colors in ju-jutsu, in order: yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown (3rd, 2nd, 1st degree) and black (1st – 10th.) 3. You must know when to bow in the dojo and how to execute the bows correctly. You must know the names of the two bows, ritsu rei (standing bow) and za rei (kneeling bow.) 4. You will be tested over basic rules of dojo etiquette. 5. You must be able to count to ten in Japanese, for the purpose of doing exercises: ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, shichi, hachi, ku, ju.
Technique Demonstration
I. Kicking Techniques (keri waza)
1. hiza geri (knee kick) 2. mae geri keage (front snap kick)
II. Striking Techniques (atemi waza)
1. teisho tsuki (palm heel strike) 2. oi tsuki (lunge punch)
III. Blocking Techniques (uke waza)
1. age uke (rising block) 2. uchi uke (inner forearm block) 3. gedan barai (downward rotary block)
IV. Stances (tachi waza)
1. kiba dachi (horse-riding stance) 2. yoko dachi (side stance) 3. musubi dachi (bowing stance) 4. shizenhontai (informal attention stance) 5. jigohontai (randori stance) 6. mae migi jigotai (front right stance) 7. mae hidari jigotai (front left stance) 8. neko dachi (cat stance)
V. Self-defense You will need to know two counters for the following attacks:
1. cross-hand wrist grab 2. roundhouse strike to the head
