I first started taking Toeido at Martial Arts America sometime in July of 1996 in Valparaiso Indiana. This was the first martial art I had ever trainined in, other than shadow boxing after watching a martial arts movie of some sort. In the fall of 1998 my sensei left Martial Arts America and started up a dojo, called The Institute of Traditional Martial Arts, with sifu Vonnie Peterson. There I continued to study Toeido in which I currently hold a 1st degree black belt in. I also studied Tae Kwon Do for about 6 months in which I reached Purple belt. Yang style Tai Chi under Sifu Vonnie Peterson. Japanese Swordsmanship (Kenjutsu) under Kurt Peterson and Shawn Housler, in which I have earned a 2nd degree black belt. And Japanese Jujutsu under Tony Sandilla in which I have earned a 1st degree black belt. In the 2002/2003 I went to Bloomington IN to study at IU Bloomington. There I breifly practiced many arts, including Hapkido, Aikido, Iaido, Modern Arnis, Kendo, and Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. I spent most of my time there training in Judo which I earned a green belt. I then moved back to Valparaiso where I continued training in Toeido and Japanese Jujutsu. In the fall of 2003 I began teaching Japanese Jujutsu at the Valparaiso YMCA. In 2005 I briefly trainined at some of the local schools in the Valaparaiso area. I trained for 2 months in Shorin Ryu Karate in hobart and 3 months in Brazillian Jujutsu in Valparaiso. I am currently training and teaching Japanese Jujutsu and Toeido.

UM it took me 8 years I think to earn my blackbelt in toeido. But I was gone for a year and not practicing as much during that time. Jujutsu was only 6 years. I think my white belt took a year or maybe 10 months to earn, but back then class structure was a lot different and we almost never worked towards rank techniuqe. We did a lot of application and stealth work back then. then most of the others once we moved to the ITMA took about 4-5 months I think. some less some more, from 1st brown to black was a year or 2 I think.

Hi. My name is MIke. Let's see. When I was 6 my parents brought up the idea of Karate classes to help build my self confidence. I took one class and for some reason that I don't remember I never went back. Though somehow I still remember the blocks they taught me that day. In high school I learned little bits and pieces of things from my buddy Jeff who was taking like 800 martial arts at the same time. Skip ahead about 3 years or so, I attended a free Jujitsu class at the Y with my sister. I really liked it yet she convinced me not to go back cuz there were "too many little kids". I still remember the crosshand grab escape manevuer from that day. And currently I'm back at the Y learning JuJu from Carl-sensei. 4 classes under my belt, whoo! I'm really interested in Toeido and considering going into that as well.
So as you can see, I am quite fearsome.

This is Barb. I have been taking JuJitsu for 4 years, most recently at the Valpo Y. I enjoy Sensei's class very much. I also take Shorin Ryu Shorinkan Karate at the Y, with Sensei Archer. I am testing shortly, for my Orange Belt in Shorin Ryu. I have taken a little bit of Kali/Escrima and Taekwondo. I am a martial arts junkie. I love traditional martial arts and the newer martial arts. I take Kobudo and hope to soon take Aikido, Kenjutsu and someday, Kendo. I'm a late bloomer to martial arts, but I am so glad that I got involved. I hope to someday teach martial arts and women's self-defense.

i have no life and decided to do something about it. Hey, that was one of my main motivations for starting to train. I started mid-march, and since then the impact on nearly every aspect of my life has been very positive. There's nothing really to lose, and a lot to be gained, so keep at it and don't quit! You can never learn too much, I say.
