Below is the Current (as of 4/26/06) curriculum for the YMCA. All belt requirments are subject to change. Also at your tests you may be asked to preform things from previous belts or other technuiqes we have shown you in class.

This is awesome! What a great idea! Thanks for posting these. I have been out with some hip/back problems, and getting checked out by the doctor. (NOT a Martial Arts related problem!) I hope to be there Thursday, but have to take it easy until the MRI gets read. In the meantime, I will work on the wazas, etc. for Yellow and Orange Belt requirements. Jujutsu rocks!

Carl, do you know I'll be tested for the Orange belt? I want to make sure I'm available and ready to go. Evenings? Weekend or weekday? Do I need to find a partner to do routines/defense with?

Um not sure when, the test will be, I want to make sure that you know all the orange belt stuff rpetty good before we test you. Im thinking probably the same time we do a couple yellow belt tests, maybe in a couple weeks. But I'd like to get Mr. Owens to pre-test everyone thats going to test first, then I'll see if Sandilla Sensei can come in and test you guys, I can do tests but id like to have him and Owens Sensei there to. The test wiull probably happen during class though, and we will give you notice to make sure you can make it Partners will be provided at teh test with the people your testing with and other students, or myself or joe.

Yeah I'd like to be in on that orange belt test too. I know pretty much everything except the 8 points of balance or whatever that was, and a couple of the punches and kicks, I think.

Hi Carl. I should be back to participating in approx. a week. I plan to come in on Thursday to hang out and watch. The doctor gave me an epidural pain injection and okay'd doing martial arts and running once again! YEAH! ;D I will need class practice time for Yellow and Orange, but I do know this stuff. Just need to brush up and practice before taking any tests. Have you changed to 10:30 on Saturdays now?

I'm just curious, how does one go beyond 1st degree black belt?

In the style of Jujutsu we do there is no getting past first degree black belt, my instructor Tony Sandillia is a 2nd degree so 1st is as high as he can promote anyone. In other styles it varies, but usually anything past 2nd or 3rd degree Black is not based on technuiqes. Its based more on what you give back to the art usually in the form of teaching but also in other things like writing books, videos, touring with seminars ect.

Carl, I just got an assignment in Chicago for the next three weeks or so, and I'm not sure if I can make it to any weeknight classes (bummer). May I come to the Sat. classes? Also, please let me know about the date/time of the belt test. Weekends would be best, but if I have advanced notice, I could leave work early on a weeknight to attend.
Thanks....

You can definantly go to the saturday classes, even if you come to the weekday classes. Not sure when the test is yet. I have to talk to Sandillia Sensei, but the orange belt one wont be for a while, want to make sure you and mikes stuff is really polished for that. You are welcome to test for yellow though if you want, but still Im not sure when that will be yet.

Carl, I am moving closer to Chicago this week, and its becoming harder and harder to make it to class. I would really like to get that orange belt before I have to move to another dojo, or I'm going to feel like I didn't accomplish as much as I could have. I will still be coming on Saturdays, but I would really like it if you could help me get prepared. Think this is possible?

Sure, Maybe on saturdays we could work on that stuff after class, plus during. However even if you do not recive an orange belt, do not feel like you havent acomplished anything. Belts are only for decoration, they dont really mean to much. At least in my opinion, I know a white belt that did jujutsu for 2 years, and never got a belt. But he has the skills and knowledge of a blue or green belt. Belts dont really matter, just look at matt hughes, im pretty sure he doesnt have a belt in anything, but he beat Royce Graice, and dominated him in his own game on the ground. And I know black belts that arent as skilled as some purple belts. Not any black belts from our style, but from others.

I definitely feel like I've accomplished something in your class. I've taken Judo a few times, off and on in the past, and I've read plenty of books and articles. I think the Y course was a chance for me to finally work on things I had only been thinking about for years (the eight points of balance, for example). I'm also glad you run class the way you do, and you have been an excellent teacher, especially in making theories easier to understand and apply. At this point, I think I just want that $%@& belt because I've never belted in anything -- ever.
